Favorite workhorse reelThis is a great reel for “normal” applications. Texas rigs, jigs, chatterbaits , swimbaits , crankbaits , does great and feels good. I use the SLX DC for my specialty applications but this SLX A is too good and affordable for everything else.

SLX A flip flopI heard the talks went and got one… I had it on this one rod and omg I was very disappointed. I kept having issues and just couldn’t get it figured out.. well the rod lost a insert so everytime I casted it cut the line or backlashes every other cast… got a new rod… I LOVE THIS THING… 1/8 oz jig… no problem… 3/4 oz jig… no problem… I literally will only have 1 brake on.. in the wind… spool tension flopping around… NO ISSUES..I love it. Once I fixed the rod issue it completely changed how I feel about it.. keep in mind I’m a Diawa guy…

Great Reel for the priceThis is one of my favorite reels. This reels so smooth and I use it on a 7 ft MH casting rod. And I throw all kinds of lures on this reel. Has good casting distance for an awesome price point of $99. I would definitely recommend this if you are on a tight budget.

Best bang for your buck reel out thereI have a couple of these reels and I have had a problem out off them yet. I through a light jerk bait on one of them and the breaks have no problem throwing it at all. Love this reel especially for the price.

If you're gonna buy this, don'tI had a bunch of these reels before they updated them. And all 3 of them broke. The reel would reel backwards and the drag would no longer work. It wouldn't stay tight. I have more reels than I can count and never had this happen on any of them between high or low end. I have heard that they fixed that issue in these newer models. But in my opinion if you are gonna buy this reel. Spend the tiny extra and get the SLX Xt. Those reels are so much better than these ones for only $30 more. I have a bunch of those. They cast way farther and have magnetic brakes where these don't. So are these reels good, yes. But i wouldnt ever buy one. The SLX XT is so much better. These aren't worth it in my opinion.

Great Reel For An Experienced FishermanAs someone who has bought the competitors $99 reel, this is definitely the best in terms of casting distance and smoothness on the retrieve. The Lews LFS or Daiwa CA80 are both easier to cast for a beginner, but they don't hold a candle to the SLX when it comes it distance and smoothness. Great reel for the money, and if you can find the discounted like the 2 I have, they are even more worth it.

Comments: i purchased this reel on sale , I'm a Diawa man but always wanted to see what all the hype was about with the shimano reels so like i said i bought it on sale for $75 and put it on a flacon mh rod I've used texas rig and chatterbait with it and it's a solid really nice reel ounce you learn how to work the braking system, i set my reel with only two brakes on and then tuned the knob and very seldom backlash but like i said it's a really good reel just keep an eye out and buy on sale or it's worth $100 but I'm on a budget.

Comments: Shimano did a great job upgrading the slx. I have both the original slx and the slx A and I can say for sure that there is a difference in the smoothness if the slx A. It is an absolute workhorse.

From: Lucas: 7/19/23

Comments: Solid upgrade to the slx the description is misleading tho says there's an external adjustment for the reel like the other reels in the slx series but there is not tho. Don't let that be a deal breaker tho it cast and reels smooth. For 100 bucks it's a steal. I will be adding more of these reels to my arsenal in the future.
