Something that is often overlooked by other anglers when it comes to topwater fishing, specifically with walking style baits, is adding a Front Runner to your presentation. A Front Runner is a small bait accessory that anglers can add to their topwater set-up to create a very unique presentation that triggers ferocious strikes. When rigged properly it mimics a small fish chasing some type of forage on the surface, which triggers the predatory instincts of a bass to attack. The Front Runner is also highly effective when fish are schooling and gives you the opportunity to catch two fish at once. Tie one on and put more fish in the boat next time you’re out topwater fishing.
Attach the Front Runner. We recommend when using a Front Runner to use a 30-50lb braided mainline on your topwater set up. Any preferred connection knot can be used as well.
Attach a short mono leader to the back of the Front Runner using 20-30lb class monofilament line. You don’t want to go lighter than 20lb because if you hook two fish at once you need the heavier line to absorb the shock. Give yourself enough line on the mono leader so that you will have a 10-20” gap between the two baits once complete.
Tie on your preferred walking bait 10-20" behind the Front Runner. Trim your tag ends and now you are ready to fish.
Remember to check your state's fish and game regulations and make sure you’re not violating the number of hooks allowed on one bait.
